Doug embodies trust, courage, and direction, making him the guide that swims beside you. He keeps the surface in sight, allowing light and the buoyancy of simple humanity to show the way.
Doug’s work guiding clients through change makes him both river and rock: fluid as he flows with clients’ feelings, solid in his calming, competent presence.
Decades of experience have afforded Doug a confidence he enjoys sharing: the knowledge that our feelings are guiding us. Back to the surface. Back to the warmth. Back to the light.
Doug’s books explore the educational, practical, and theoretical applications of his convictions regarding mobility and change.
His first book, Safe Passage: How Mobility Affects People and What International Schools Should Do About It, led to changes worldwide in how CIS-accredited international schools are required to address mobility.
His second book, Safe Passage for Attachment Systems, formed the basis for his PhD and is freely available. It provides the theoretical and empirical basis for his and SPAN’s work.

Health is usually in the middle. So is truth. Doug helps people find their way from the peripheries, where rocks reside, back towards the true center—which is almost always characterized by nuance and flow.
